Taki

Taki is a cosy and quiet retreat, just a two-hour drive from the city. It is situated 73km northeast of Calcutta, in North 24-Parganas, bordering Bangladesh. It is also the gateway to the Sunderbans.Ichamati is the main attraction of this place. An imaginary line through the middle of the river separates the two Bengals.

A picturesque river retreat by the Ichamati river, the Taki Rajbari is a must visit spot when you come to Taki. It used to be the land of zamindars. They ruled this place during the Mughal rule in India and continued their dominion during the British rule as well. The first Zamindar in this place was Krishna Das Raychowdhury, who built a Rajbari in Taki. Though most of the his palatial home was disappeared in the Ichhamati river but the ruins are still a crowd attractor like The Old banyan tree and its roots are a must see which is still carrying the essence of Bengal’s heritage and old architecture.

Ichamati River is a trans-boundary river which flows through India and Bangladesh and also forms the natural boundary between the two countries. At the end of Durga Puja , on Vijaya Dashami, the river offers a unique spectacle when boats crammed with people from both countries converge to immerse their respective idols. The local people look forward to the annual reunion on Dashami. On that day, people from both sides of the border hoist their national flags on boats carrying idols and meet across the Ichhamati. The man-made boundary vanishes for the day.

The old Tap which was built by Smt. Swarnalata Basu in the memory of his husband Upendranath Basu in 1338(bengali year) is another must view as it was one of the ancient technique of water pumping system built in West Bengal.
